We massively underestimate how much sugar is engineered into our everyday environment.

I’m not saying sugar is “evil” or that people should never have it, but it’s in way more foods than people realise, including things that aren’t even considered treats.

What’s interesting is how it interacts with behaviour:

– it’s designed to be highly palatable

– it encourages repeat consumption

– it’s often paired with habits (coffee, snacks, “treats”)

At the same time, governments have started treating it as a public health issue. The UK introduced a soft drinks levy, and many countries have similar policies to reduce sugar in products or discourage overconsumption.

That suggests it’s not just about individual choices it’s also about how food environments are designed.

I just think it’s odd how something so widespread and influential in our diets is still framed as purely a personal responsibility issue, rather than something shaped by industry and policy.
