Using TV as a bridge to regain focus is better and more practical than trying to quit screens entirely.

When we talk about reducing screen time or improving focus, the usual advice is to just stop using technology. But for most ordinary people, completely cutting off the sources of dopamine our brains crave during leisure time is nearly impossible and often leads to relapse.

My unpopular opinion is that we should focus on substitution, not abstinence. And the best substitute for a smartphone is the television.

Compared to movies, long-form TV series are an ideal middle ground. An episode is short enough to be manageable, but far longer and more complex than a short-form video like a Reel or TikTok. A proper TV series has a continuous narrative arc that holds your interest over time.

This forces your brain to maintain a baseline level of focus for a 30-minute+ duration, rather than the constant fragmentation of a few seconds on a phone. It’s a gentle, less painful way to train your brain to concentrate again.

Recently, I’ve been practicing this myself. After a long workday, I put my phone down to charge and sit in front of my Hisense E7N Pro to watch a quality series.

Even better, if you re-watch classic or well-produced series, you can move from just consuming content to actually analyzing the storytelling and logic. This can provide mental stimulation and inspiration that is entirely missing from infinite scrolling.

The TV, in this case, isn't the problem; it's a tool for transition. It’s better to be focused on a single story on a large screen than to have your mind scattered by a thousand fragments on a small one.
