The Two Towers is significantly worse than the first and third Lord of the Rings films

The first and third Lord of the Rings movies are some of my favourite films of all time, and while they deliver in spectacle, they also deliver in heart. The Two Towers is the only one which didn’t manage to strike this balance well, and the entire movie feels like one prolonged set piece. Compare it to the first Lord of the Rings, where the first 25 minutes or so is getting to know these characters, and the movie overall masterfully switches gears between fast and slow. Epic and intimate. The Two Towers, by comparison, feels like a flanderisation of what Lord of the Rings can be. Easily the worst of the trilogy, and by a wide, wide margin.
