I think Godzilla movies are better when he is akin to a force of nature destroying everything in sight, and we poor humans are struggling to stand up to him, like the first Godzilla movie and Shin Godzilla etc. The ones where he is protecting us against other monsters just feel a bit too "superhero" genre to me.
As Godzilla is meant to be a metaphor for nuclear weapons, the destruction of humanity fits his theme more. I would even go so far as to say I enjoyed 1998 Godzilla (hated as it was) to the Universal Studio recent movies.
