I’ve played shooters for years and the finals is the first one that has mastered nearly everything I look for in a FPS. The gun play feels great, the movement is fast and fluid, all the maps are great and the verticality of them works with the movement, building your class is simple and fun, the incredible destructible environments make for really unique game play, etc.
It also succeeds in what it’s trying to be so well; being a game show shooter. The intros to matches are exciting, the commentators add so much to the match, all the retro arcade sound effects give it so much charm. But most importantly the high intense moments are so rewarding, even if you lose. Hearing the countdown from the crowd while you’re struggling to hold the last point while everything is exploding around you never gets old.
I started playing when I first came out a few years ago and I only have around 80 hours on it. I’ll come back to it every once in a while and I always wondering why I take breaks from it. I always have a fun and rewarding time with it. I don’t think it’s perfect, some of the random events can make things too hectic (which fits the game so well and I love it in casual matches) and some of the light builds can feel unfair to play against. But I don’t hear people talk about it enough. Always a blast to play.
