The Simpsons peaked in Seasons 3–8, while Family Guy’s golden era is usually considered Seasons 1–3 (4–5 are also pretty good). When you compare these two, Family Guy is way better. The humor is absurd, faster, more direct, and actually makes you laugh out loud instead of just smirking. A big part of that is the cutaway gags, which let the show fire off completely random jokes without being tied to the story. What happens if a joke is not funny? It doesn’t matter because there is another one coming five seconds later. That is quality television right there.
Meanwhile, The Simpsons leans so heavily on storytelling and character driven humor that it just ends up being boring. Like yeah, it’s clever and all, but it’s not nearly as funny moment to moment. I want to laugh at Peter turning his house into an independent country, not sit there thinking about who shot Mr. Burns.
