I've noticed more and more people who talk about wanting to 'debate' an issue and I don't know, in most cases I really think people should view them as discussions. Debate can be great in an academic sense and the skills you learn doing it can help make people more persuasive and make them better leaders. With debate, one thing so many forget is you are required to be able to persuade people even if you 100% disagree with the position you are supposed to take.

This is very important because if you learn how to view things from more than one perspective it should help you better advocate for your position or at the very least he help people find common ground. Debate can also be a valuable way for people to see varying positions on an issue but most of the debates we see to day are all about soundbites and there really is zero value at all for anyone

What made me start this thread was a friend of mine and I were talking and he said something about wanting to debate an issue with me(one where he kind of knew I might have a different opinion). I replied I'd be happy to talk about the issue but there is no reason to 'debate it' and he didn't understand the difference. I just pointed out a discussion doesn't have to be a contest.

Too much of what we see is two sides given talking points and blindly arguing those talking points while ignoring the rest. it is annoying. Some people though have zero interest in even considering an opposing point of view and I think that that is tragic because so many need to view all things as a contest. I don't think that the best solutions to problems come from 'debate'
