Okay, so I have always wanted to say this because it basically summarizes my life. I was always afraid to say it since I knew people would get upset.

For context, I came from a low income background and was raised in an Asian household as a second generation immigrant. My mom and dad children were refugees during the Vietnam War. I am reflecting on the past 6 years of my life, starting from high school.

Honestly, becoming successful felt pretty straightforward. It all started in high school. Just study your ass off no matter what. Get straight A’s, and a few B’s are fine too. Get into a very good college with a strong major. I chose accounting, and from there you are basically guaranteed a solid salary if you stay disciplined. All my friends who followed the same path are also doing well. Yes, I had debt to attend school, but I paid them off within about 1.5 years.

Now I make around $180k a year with no debt and I am doing fine. This is my 3rd year working, and hopefully I will get promoted by my 5th year.

Looking back, it honestly was not that complicated. High school was hell at times, but what really stuck with me was what my mom said:

“would you rather live a comfy life for 4 years but suffer throughout adulthood, or suffer for 4 years and live a comfy life as an adult? The answer is pretty easy, the latter. So study, study your butt off, get into a good major at a top college.”

I genuinely feel like success begins in high school. Once you realize that grinding during those years gives you the highest chance of success later in life, the path becomes pretty clear.
