Not every friendship needs to be maintained on a regular schedule. some people drift and that's not a failure. it's just people changing and moving in different directions but we've created this idea that if you don't check in regularly you're a bad friend. so people send "hey stranger" messages they don't really mean to people they've genuinely grown apart from and both people know it's maintenance not connection. i'd rather have honest silence with someone i've drifted from than performed closeness that neither of us actually feels. some friendships have a natural end and pretending otherwise doesn't keep the friendship. it just delays the acknowledgment that it's already gone
