Society is getting dumber, because it is getting older

Society is aging. Fertility is dropping worldwide, and in developed countries this combination means the total population remains stable, while the proportion of elderly people rises.

Elderly people suffer cognitive decline, at 80 years of age half of them will have outright dementia, and the mean age is approaching that number every passing year. Which means, societies as a whole by majority of people will soon be composed of dumber decision makers, because most decision makers will be at an age where they start getting dumber due to biology itself.

And that is whithout considering the secondary effects, like the emotional load and cognitive load on the not-yet-with-dementia population.

So we went from a population of malnourished people, to a population of lead-poisoned people, to a peak in intelligence likely sitting at around the 90's or so, and now we should be starting to see entire populations become more stupid so long as they are shrinking. We are past the peak, so expect more stupidity to come.

TL: DR: old people get cognitive decline, in absolute and relative terms society is becoming old. This will have consequences.
