RTO isn’t about real estate the government wants you to consume more

Okay so yes the government is giving tax breaks to companies who participate in the Return to Office order. But why?

Because people consume less when they aren’t home. For example, when you are commuting to work what is the likelihood you will stop by a restaurant and grab something to eat, versus staying home and grabbing a snack that you have already bought. And what about gas? no one is buying gas for a car that doesn’t go anywhere. More wear and tear on your car as well. Need a new tire because it takes you 1h and 30m to get to work “Stop by Discount Tire”. Need clothes for the office because work attire is business casual, head to TJ Max for a few things. You don’t need new clothes if you aren’t going anywhere. Shoes as well.

And yes DoorDash exists and online services, but those services don’t compete with the good and services you would need to buy along the way when you are commuting. Also those services are extremely expensive which make the alternatives more attractive.

There are also several small things that one would need to consume that people don’t necessarily think about. For example, one time I forgot my umbrella one day omw to work. Since I take the train I seriously needed an umbrella. So I had to go and purchase an entire umbrella just to avoid getting wet.

Working from home saves the average American more money but other companies that produce oil, food, clothes etc lose profit because of it.
