I wouldn't be so hard on this movie if it wasn't plastered everywhere & critics were saying "Hoppers is amazing! Pixar is back!" as if Pixar has never made a good movie before. (I guess The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and WALL-E don't exist according to these people's logic) I don't know if Disney's paying critics to hype their movies or what, but Hoppers is nothing more than a loud kids' flick with cartoony slapstick, and unfunny & outdated Millennial humor. (It was so corny to the point where they even admitted they were ripping off Avatar) Yes, Turning Red also has this kind of comedy, but it was way more grounded & relatable with its mature themes of puberty. It has better emotional beats & is overall a better-written film. The protagonist in Hoppers is quite a vanilla character as she's just your stereotypical rebellious teen who happens to be a nerd.

Pixar used to make movies that anyone of any age can enjoy. Now that role has shifted to other studios while they make generic nothing burger movies. Sony's recent animated film GOAT also relies on tropes to tell its story, but it does it much better job at it while delivering more character development, emotional scenes, and relatability than Hoppers. Along with the comedy (leaning on Gen Z humor) and animation being better (especially since they're riffing off of the recent successes of Spider-Verse & KPop Demon Hunters) The Super Mario Galaxy movie, while not great, accomplishes what it's trying to do. And despite your enjoyment depending on how familiar you are with Mario, it's an entertaining film for both kids & adults (unlike Hoppers). DreamWorks is releasing their next movie, Forgotten Island (which has a trailer out now) later this year, and not only does the animation look gorgeous, but it also looks like it'll be a funny, emotional, and emotional film. (Which are of course things Hoppers failed at doing like I mentioned)
