Unless of course it’s stuff like toiletries, soap, or other disposable goods and necessities (mattresses, and the like) OR you live in a place that you have absolutely no access to used goods - that can’t otherwise be bought secondhand - I really don’t see why anyone should ever buy anything new.
I have been living this way for at least eight years now. It’s been a very long time since I bought anything from Amazon, much less brand new from a department store.
So much shit ends up wasted in the dump. Why leave it to rot?
For example, iPhones. I have bought used ones for years at half the price or less because it just makes more sense than buying new. I don’t feel like giving apple my money. Why do you truly need the “latest and greatest” model? Instead of buying them brand new, why not wait at least a year or two and buy them secondhand from a reputable source?
At this point we are heading towards a huge environmental crisis, due in part to human overconsumption.
I just don’t see why it’s necessary to spend a shit ton of money on something new when you could get it used for a fraction of the price, without the environmental impact or questionable ethics (when it comes to labor practices from large corporations.)
Is this really an unpopular opinion? I think so. From my perspective it seems people everywhere are beholden to consumerism. Otherwise department stores wouldn’t be so popular, right?
There’s enough stuff in the world.
Edit: I think a lot of you are making excuses for your unnecessary consumption, because you’re too comfortable with it, ASIDE from those who do not have secondhand options easily accessible for necessary goods. Of course there are exceptions but I don’t think everyone falls under than category.
