Pecan pie is far more American than apple pie

How does the saying "As American as apple pie" make any sense? A majority of Eurasian cultures have some versions of the dish and the version Americans make uses exclusively old word ingredients and one can hardly tell them apart from the the ones in England.

Meanwhile the pecan pie is rarely seen outside the US, based on a nut native to the US, and represents a distinct culinary innovation of colonists that populated the US.
