Feels like anytime I graciously offer a friend a bag of Chex Mix or Munchies I hear grousing about the pretzels. Everybody just wants it to be a full-on flavor explosion and view pretzels as an obstacle to that, when in reality they're the glue that holds it all together. It acts as palette cleanser and stabilizer, the salty/cheesy/whatever flavor doesn't hit as hard without the satisfying pretzel crunch. Pretzels should also be the anchor point from which you grab from the bowl/bag, as they're less saturated in flavoring than the rest and keep your fingers cleaner.
Maybe you're still on board, I might lose you here: I think these products should have far more pretzels in them, the flavor scientists know this but are hamstrung by cowards like my friends who think the pretzel should be eliminated from the bag altogether. Whenever I buy a bag of party mix I typically rectify this error by buying a bag of pretzels and dumping a couple of handfuls in.
