The generator allows users to prompt with natural language and produce video content. After OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared examples on Twitter / X on February 15th, 2024, the generation tool went viral online, prompting discourse, memes and media coverage.
Sora's AI video generation was used in numerous memes between 2024 and early 2026, including notable trends such as Sora 2 AI Olympic Games videos and Sora AI Chiropractor Videos. Despite its widespread usage online in the mid-2020s, Sora was highly contentious online, especially among the anti-AI crowd. In late March 2026, it was announced that OpenAI was shutting down its Sora video app, with many rejoicing at the news and sharing memes about Sora's shutdown.
