Title.
No Man's Sky was advertised as a prodecurally generated universe, technically multiplayer but due to the vastness of space it would be "next to impossible" to meet anyone.
The catch was basically Space survival, Space exploration with entirely foreign worlds with believable evolution and therefor alien but believable fauna and flora.
What was shipped was a shit show, it turned out that the multiplayer part was a flat out lie when people stood at the exact same spot and couldn't see each other, all planets looked the same it was no where near the footag we saw in trailers and teasers.
Everyone was making fun of the devs (rightfully so) and they went back and changed the game fundamentally. Basically they realised they failed hard on what they promised and just turned around, stripped what didn't work and added features and gameplay that did.
YET: the game is nowhere near what was advertised. It simply is a better game than at launch.
To make this more tangible for people:
Imagine you got to a Pizzeria, a real one, italian. And they advertise has having the best Pizza in the city. The pictures on their menu are actually real pictures of real pizza. Not crafted with glue and paint, but real appetizing pizza. It looks great, it sounds great and everyone is sitting at their tables on opening night.
And the waiters come out and serve worse than cheapest frozen pizza pizza. The dough is severely undercooked, the cheese is burnt, they offered like 10 varieties of pizza yet they only serve 3 no matter what you ordered. Each pizza is cold and some have live insects on them.
People become upset and send those pizzas back. Many many customers leave but some stay. It takes a while and the waiters come back out. And they serve each and everyone a servicable burger. Like.. it's better than fastfood joints like McDonalds or Burger King, but it's nothing special.
Now those people eat and leave the restaurant and say "Oh my god, this pizza place really turned it around! what a redemption arch!" You can't get Pizza there anymore. They just serve burgers now.
