News organizations should not be allowed to report most research findings. Scientific findings should only be shared with the news when they are suitable for public reporting. There should also be an additional peer-review process to determine which studies are appropriate for news coverage.
Early studies are incomplete, misleading, or easily misunderstood by the public. Scientific results need to be tested much more and repeatedly before they can be trusted before news outlets should be allowed to report on them. These incomplete results create confusion, spread false hope, and damage public trust when later studies contradict the original findings. Researchers and other scientists are better prepared to evaluate the limits, methods, and significance of new studies before sharing them widely. For these reasons, most research findings should remain within the scientific community until they are supported by stronger evidence.
