If you’re not familiar with Little Free Libraries, they’re these small huts that are supposed to be for exchanging books by the honor system.
I want to preface by saying that there are SOME places where this makes sense. For example, in a rural vacation town like a lake with summer rentals, I can see why it would be nice to have a little library to exchange books while you’re on vacation and a full library would be underutilized.
However, the vast majority places need a proper library. Like, a place where you can go get books and are expected to return them. A place where the books are protected from the elements and there aren’t birds or bees building nests between the books. **You would be better off donating your money to a community fund** than making a little performative mailbox for the books you don’t want to read anymore.
In fact, the places where little free libraries are most popular are usually nice communities like college towns, which already have a public library. There will be like 20 little stupid huts with soggy books and then one perfectly functional library begging for public funds. Support your local library and stop making stupid little bird houses.
