The first game the whole message of it or the mental thoughts of the character unfolding was Joel is not a good man, we see him as a grieving father who kills hundreds of of people to save one life that could’ve been used to save even more. There’s a whole dilemma on the basis of how far are you willing to go for a loved one and it asks the viewers that question in a very subtle but effective way, after the last mission in the first game you have to wonder if Joel made the right call and you unconsciously put yourself in those shoes so you have an even more fulfilled understanding of where the character is coming from.
Tlou2 has a moral dilemma when it comes to Ellie but it wasn’t used to its fullest like the first game did w Joel, the story jumps all over the place w switching to Abby it makes it kinda harder to follow the story it would’ve been way more impactful if we played as Abby first for a lil while that way the whole unfolding Joel actually killed my dad would’ve been way more impactful, there’s just so many things they messed up while trying to set the message of Ellie realizing she doesn’t need to chase revenge but now she has to deal w the consequences of the fact she did. It could’ve been a good story with a good message and a good question to leave the viewer with but HORRIBLE execution.
