It prepares kids for the world, if you ask me. Heck, some children experience this sort of stuff early on! We may not like it, but it happens.
And besides, just look at The Lion King and Charlotte's Web. Both stories involve a main character dying and even though it's heartbreaking, it's necessary for a coming-of-age story like those are.
I just find it so annoying when kids and family media has a scene where it's revealed that someone either didn't die at all or comes back to life. Just look at TEC from Paper Mario TTYD. Or several characters throughout Disney's history. Or multiple characters from Doctor Who.
Now, I am NOT saying that all kids media needs something like this in it. We need a balance between the fully light-hearted stuff and the darker, more mature kids media. And we obviously need to be careful about how we're doing it seeing as how we don't want to traumatize anyone.
But still, we need more new mature kids stories out there.
