I usually hate when people insist on how to experience a piece of media, but I have one and ONLY one that I fully agree with.
YOU DON’T SWING RAGTIME
The jazz comes from the syncopated right hand compared to a bouncy but steady rhythmed left hand. That’s where the groove comes from, not swing.
The thing that sets this apart in my opinion is the fact that usually the part that’s armchair reviewed isn’t SO INTEGRAL to the piece of media and so IGNORED by the majority. If it was a minority who swung ragtime I wouldn’t care, but it’s so common and I see so many people do it that it feels like if the armchair reviewers don’t strike, it’ll just get worse and worse.
I hate armchair reviewing but hopefully people can back me up on this, because it’s getting so common to hear *insert famous rag* swung like 8 times out of 10 unless played by a true professional. It feels like in the group of people playing ragtime, the people who play it without swing are just few and far between.
