I do not give a shit about me being in the world, I do not want to see my ass fighting a dragon, I do not care about me when I play a game, I care about the characters in the story and in the world. I hate it when I am playing a jrpg with well formed party except the MC being a blank state for me to project onto. It leads to me caring about eveyone but the main character and not caring about the mc is kinda of a big deal in any story.
this goes double for JRPGs where usually you do not get to actually even define your character or have my choiches shape the world(for an example Persona) whats even the poin then. You are giving me vessel I can't even control that has nothing going outside of my control.
I would drop every self insert protag in 99% of my games for a well defined MC that is nothing like me. I am nothing like Henry in Disco Elysium and I love that guy, I would die for him, I could care less for what happens to Joker in Persona 5.
