My theory is that GRRM have those books written already, they’ll just not going to be released until after his death.
We were all there to witness Game of Thrones downfall. Arguably the biggest flop in TV history. Yes, the biggest fault with that was on both producers, who wanted to end things fast to move on to their big Disney deal. But it was also said that while GRRM didn’t tell them how he plans to finish his series - he told them the general direction where story should go. I guess the idea was to continue releasing books after show ends, and with all of the spin-offs, to create whole universe/franchise.
When the TV show ended - it was a disaster. You could hardly find someone who was satisfied with the ending. I think general public expectations fell on GRRM to release next book to wash out bad taste after show ended.
Now GRRM living his best life right now. Interviews, podcasts, conventions, etc. Who would want to ruin that for themselves? Isn’t it easier to say “I’ll release the book, when i’ll release the book” and leave it at that? Easier to deal with this, than with people who won’t like your stuff (and let’s be honest - there always be people who won’t like something).
I don’t blame him. I would probably do the same in situation like this.
