Im mostly writing this in spite of my friend who for the life of him will not shut up about hxh beinf the (one of the) best anime.
I find the characters to be shallow and to lack any meaningfull dept to them, they go through almost 0 character development, theyre difficult to relate to and to actualy form a meanigfull emotional connection to. For example, if gon or killua were to die, i would not gaf. Another thing to mention is that while Meruem is well written character (best in the series imo), he is not as well written as hyped up to be. He is monster that learned emotion thanks to someone who he considered inferior yet he could never beat. He is not a monster that suddenly gained his humanity, he still wouldve enslaved humanity, no question about it.
(btw im rly sorry if i get some things wrong or misunderstood, its been a minute since ive watched hxh)
The show also follows the same formula.
-gon and killua discover an opponent
-theyre to weak to beat it
-they train
-they win
Now of course it doesnt always follow this patern and there is some nuance to this but this is a simplified version.
Because of this, and the fact that there are almost no deaths in the series, it never actually feels like there are any stakes in any of the fights.
I also find that this show doesnt "explore" the viewers emotions enough (idk how else to word it) it often has funny, happy, or hype moments. But it very rarely explores the sad or angry moments. The characters themselves do feel sad or angry but that emotion doesnt come through to the audience properly, for example when kite died, or when gon transformed into adult gon, that moment, to the the audience, felt more hype than angry.
Another point i feel like needs to be adressed is the world building. Togashi never trust his viewers to figure anything out themselves and quite literaly puts a tutorial on screen to explain how something works.(i understand that this is necessary for explaining nen as it is very complex but it does become annoying)
Speaking of which, credit needs to be given where its due, i truly find the nen system to be amazingly well thought out.
So this was my little rant, sorry if the writing kinda sucks, i tried to keep the arguments as well structured as i could. And again im sorry if i got anything wrong, its been a while since ive watched it.
