For 99% of our species existence, we have been struggling. Hungry, afraid, and totally at a loss with our existemce.
The traits that allowed us to survive up until now have been ones suited towards hardships, giving us a more generally more abrasive personality.
Our one saving grace is our social skills, which has forced us to remain atleast partially capable of coexistence.
Issue is, the world has changed and the problems with it. Now instead of food, shelter, and long term stability, we are looking for more abstract concepts; social status, monetary/material possesions, and a sense of purpose. We do NOT have the experience using our social tools enough to handle this, and thus we use the tools we are most experienced with.
TL;DR - Humanity evolved to solve our problems with hammers, but now we use the hammer for *ALL* our problems
