I think having low self-esteem can actually be useful in some ways. If you’re constantly questioning yourself, you’re way less likely to become arrogant or overconfident, and you become more humble. You notice your flaws more easily, which gives you a clearer idea of what you need to improve.
When you feel bad about where you are right now, it will push you to do better. That discomfort can be motivating, as it makes you want to grow so you don’t stay stuck feeling that way. The worse you feel the more the motivation. This is how I understand self esteem and humble vs egoistic :
On one end of the spectrum we have
Self-described negativity in relation to objective reality:
- which is a feature in people who are humble, meek, unassuming, courteous, gentle, modest, etc.
On the other end of the spectrum we have
Self-described positivity in relation to objective reality:
- which is a feature in people who are proud, arrogant, egoistical, boastful, etc.
*What I mean objective reality is in relation to the average of the people that you come into contact with, or an objective evaluation of personal merits.
I’m not saying it’s fun or ideal, but I don’t think it’s entirely negative either. Sometimes it keeps you grounded and self-aware in a way that high confidence doesn’t.
