Going to start this off by saying I might be biased because I am a german translator (it is not my mother tounge, but I have studied german for 15 years), but the reason people say german is a harsh language is because the main contact people have with it is through memes, Rammstein songs and Hitlers speeches. Every language sounds harsh if you are yelling it or singing industrial metal songs.
The things that are considered sexy in other languages, for example rolling the "r" in french, are in my opinion, much more prominent in german and it is one of the most beautiful languages when you speak it as an average (normal) person.
Also don't get me started on the memes on how german has impossibly long words. German loves compound words, but the word for "sex" in german is "Sex", it is not "Geschlechtsverkehr". "Sexual intercourse" is also significantly longer that "sex" if we want to meme it.
