“Finding yourself” is a terrible reason to go to college

This is often used as a justification for spending a lot of time and money, but it is not a strong reason when you really look at it.

“Finding yourself” is vague and has no clear outcome. There is no guarantee that college will give you direction or clarity. Many people finish college just as unsure as when they started, except with more debt and less time.

You do not need college to figure out who you are. People learn about themselves through work, relationships, travel, independent learning, and real life experience. These paths are often cheaper and more direct.

College can help some people grow, but that is usually a side effect, not the main reason to go. If the only reason someone is going is to “figure things out,” they are using an expensive system without a clear goal.

College makes more sense when there is a clear purpose like a career path, useful skills, or a degree that leads to real opportunities. Without that, “finding yourself” is not really a reason, just uncertainty with a cost attached.
