It’s a tale as old as time:
- talented writer or team creates a cohesive story with strong characters, solid lore, and a clear beginning, middle and end
- the franchise becomes popular, the IP rights expand, and more creators start to build in new stories and lore
- someone with less talent or respect for the source material comes along and adds in a new story that makes no sense, undermines the theme of the original work, or otherwise mucks things up and reduces the overall quality of the work as a whole.
This is why I’m a firm believer that nobody should take canon seriously. IPs are now just an infinite series of dice rolls until someone comes along and messes things up. Stories are best left alone once complete, like Back to the Future.
