I hear all the time about people complaining about cramped airline seats being an example of cruel companies fleecing the consumer and how people long for the days where every seat is a luxury seat and I am sick of it.
Airplanes are horribly inefficient in terms of fuel usage to distance traveled. It is the environmentally responsible move to cram as many people into each flight as possible to improve the efficiency of the plane. For short 1-5 hour flights, giving people more space than they need is a waste of fuel and money. In addition, the cost savings from packing people together can be passed down to the consumer decreasing the cost of air travel. Stop whining and deal with it, and if you are rich enough just buy first class.
