Every time I see a Ford Explorer, I immediately get anxiety that it’s a cop and I’m going to get pulled over/be in trouble (this is an unreasonable fear that I’m working through). Logically, though, I feel like it would make more sense if citizens could easily distinguish a police vehicle from others to be able to flag them down in case of emergency.
Edit to add: I live in a rural area. Lots of people have light bars/roof equipment, and a lot of people buy old cop cars and keep the extra side mirror and front grill. There are not a lot of city lights so when driving at night they look identical!
