That is a trope common in superhero movies and TV shows, and I hate how little it adheres to real world physics. Although hitting the ground is a big part of why people die when they fall from a high place, the lesser known reason is the sudden and violent change in momentum, which is why you'd be less likely to die if you fell into a tree or bush, there's a longer impulse, a.k.a. a longer period of time for you to slow down.

Now imagine a person falling from the top of a building, and a superhero suddenly swoops in and grabs them out of the air, and they're just alright. Thats not how that works, and they would either die from hitting a different hard surface that isn't the ground (like Hogarth during the climax of The Iron Giant), or from whiplash.

You cant just suddenly stop them from falling, otherwise youre just doing the ground's job for it! You gotta match the speed at which they're falling, and decelerate, or just put a massive pile of pillows under them! Physics exists you super dingus!
