Backpedalling, by definition in this context, simply means changing one's opinion/position after new information is presented. I think that's good, because it means you're not so stubborn enough to hold on to a position even if it's flawed, just so you avoid admitting that you're wrong.
The only instances that make backpedalling bad, like most other things when it comes to arguing, is when coming from a place of bad faith. In the case of backpedalling, that often comes at the form of undoing one's position rather than actually changing it, where the former seeks to avoid the criticism to still appear correct, while the latter acknowledges the opinion is flawed (or at least unclear) and takes an action to modify it.
I believe this is an unpopular opinion mainly because most people only view backpedalling exclusively as the bad-faith version, hence pushing a lot of people to stubbornly hold on to a view because at best they see it as integrity, and at worse they don't like to be incorrect.
