Azaleas shouldn’t be trimmed to unnatural shapes.

After seeing the gorgeous azaleas in Augusta on the Masters Tournament and then seeing azaleas in my neighborhood (North Carolina) that have been shaved into spherical or square shapes like freaking boxwoods, I just must say Please Don’t.

The charm of these lovely shrubs is as much in their natural shape as in their beautiful colors. The time to trim them is just after the flowers drop (now or very soon!) and it should be done by hand with clippers. There are plenty of guidelines for dealing with azaleas to keep them from getting too tall or two wide for their space, eliminating dead wood, and encouraging future flowering.

If you want a hedge, get a plant that was bred to be a hedge, not an azalea. And don’t even get me started on forsythias.
