"Air Fryer" is a perfectly acceptable term. "Convection Oven" is actually the stupid term.

Lots of people will make a big deal about air fryers. Saying, "Ackctualy, it's not an air fryer! It's just a countertop convection oven!"

This is extremely dumb for one very important reason, and that reason is that the term "convection oven" is extremely dumb, and in fact the exact opposite of what it says it is.

"Convection" means the process of heat transfer where a fluid (in this case air) is heated by some sort of heat source, thereby changing it's density, the density change creates a flow of air around the space, as cold air rushes in to replace the hot air rising.

THIS IS HOW EVERY CONVENTIONAL OVEN WORKS. This is why you put the element at the bottom, because it creates a convection current, which creates a flow of hot air that passes over the food and thereby cooks it, without the need to have anything other than a heating element to move the air.

Then manufacturers started adding a fan to move the air around faster, thereby getting improved cooking performance.

But now it's no longer a convection oven then is it? Because you went and added a fan, which is now the primary way air moves around the oven. SO WHY IN THE FUCK DID YOU GO AND CALL THESE "FAN FORCED" OVENS CONVECTION OVENS WHEN WHAT YOU DID IS MAKE THEM *NOT* CONVECTION.

This goddamn stupid marketing term was chosen purely to sound fancy and science while being literally the opposite of what has actually been changed.

At least the term "air fryer" attempts to communicate to the consumer what the device is supposed to do and how they are supposed to use it. The term "Convection Oven" exists solely to convince the consumer that the manufacturer has done something smart and sciencey, when they have actually just added a fan.

Rant over.
