a man can never sing a woman’s song better than she can.

it seems like almost every time a man sings a mediocre cover of a song that was originally sung by a woman, he gets so much praise for it and a lot of people say they prefer the man’s version. one example is Luke Comb’s version of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car. in my opinion his cover is no where near as good as the original, but now it seems to be the default everywhere i go. another example is the Calum Scott version of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own. he completely missed the point of that song and made it boring but people always act like his version is deep. Ben Platt’s cover of Addison Rae’s diet pepsi also comes to mind.

i think one time the man’s version came close to being as good as the original woman’s version was when Soft Cell covered Grace Jone’s Tainted Love. but even then they weren’t singing it better than her. the synth does the heavy lifting in Soft Cell’s version.

i’m not necessarily saying i think men can’t sound good when singing a woman’s song. i think there’s a place for it. but i feel crazy when men get so much praise for covering a woman’s song and then that version becomes the default or people don’t even know that the song was originally sung by a woman. especially because the man’s cover is so often boring or just completely misses the point of the original song.
