People like the idea of a “community” as an aesthetic and nothing more

There’s this trend going on about “if you want a village, be a villager”. The advice is always to volunteer, sit in parks, etc.

But very few people will actually do the things that matter more: actually texting back your friends, not cancelling plans just because you “don’t feel like it anymore”, even just being nice to people around you. Nowadays we’re so used to cutting off someone as soon as we don’t agree with some aspect of their personality and want to “protect my peace”. And then you go and talk about the loneliness epidemic and how “no one wants community anymore.

I know there’s a bigger explanation behind this which is that late-stage capitalism is making it much harder to meet up, stay in touch, etc. But i also think , as a society, our tolerance towards other people has reduces drastically because everyone’s too focused on reasons to talk shit about each other and cut ties. That and also, people think they need to be adopted by an extrovert or already be in a communitywhen they could so easily just REACH OUT to the people already in your life.
