The most glaring problem is the lack of compelling characters.
- The Driver completely lacks any personality whatsoever. It’s extremely clear from the beginning his only purpose is to save the woman who will become his love interest.
- The woman’s only purpose is to be saved by the Driver, and become his love interest.
- The woman’s boyfriend and the various thugs only exist to put the woman and peril and fight the Driver.
These characters have no compelling traits or motivations besides moving the plot forward. This wouldn’t normally be an issue if that plot wasn’t so boring.
It’s possibly the most copy-and-paste knight in shining armor plot line. The entire plot line is built so that anyone can project themselves onto the Driver. I hate to say it, but it’s pure male fantasy slop. Almost every man has fantasized about saving the girl next door by violently killing the people who endanger her and driving a cool car. It’s not even a bad fantasy, it’s just painfully boring to build an entire movie around it. All of the more intricate parts of the plot fade into the background since this is obvious from the beginning.
It’s essentially Taxi Driver without any of the irony or subversion that makes Taxi Driver good. It also misses having supporting themes, like how Taxi Driver has commentary about loneliness and alienation.
That’s not the only example of a well executed knight in shining armor type plot. Leon the Professional does it unironically, minus the romantic aspect. Yet, it’s still really good because the characters have interesting motivations and development.
I’ll give credit where credit is due. It’s well paced and doesn’t leave any filler. The action is entertaining. It’s well shot and nice to look at. Even the soundtrack is good. But it’s just eye candy, or a 100 minute music video.
Tldr it’s a pretty movie but the plot is painfully boring. It’s a knight in shining armor movie that doesn’t have any of the bells and whistles that make similar movies good. The boring characters reflect this lack of creativity.
