once your basic needs are sorted food, shelter, safety your brain starts finding new things to stress about. a dusty shelf, a smudged mirror, an unorganized drawer. it becomes a psychological weight.
people in poverty don't have that luxury. cleanliness is purely functional for them. wash hands, keep food safe, that's it. they're not less clean they just have bigger problems to solve.
upper class uses cleanliness standards to quietly separate themselves from everyone else being "spotless" becomes a class signal, not just a habit.
the anxiety isn't about dirt. it's about comfort. the more comfortable your life, the more disorder feels threatening.
